Researchers have made a groundbreaking discovery beneath the ice of Antarctica, uncovering a new marine world. A group of scientists from New Zealand claims to have found extraordinary creatures thriving there, as reported by British media outlets The Guardian and tech-based news platform, Life Science.
Scientists ventured to observe a subglacial channel located several hundred kilometers away from Antarctica's ice shelf, aiming to understand its role amidst climate change. In pursuit of this goal, scientists ventured into the ice, where their cameras captured some unusual "moving objects". Upon analyzing the recorded footage, scientists revealed the presence of a vast community of tiny organisms beneath the ice.
Lead researcher Craig Stevens stated, "For a moment, we thought our camera might have encountered a technical glitch. But upon closer inspection, we spotted a glimpse of a 5-mm-sized amphipod."
He further added, "We've explored other parts of the ice shelf and anticipated finding similar entities within our reach. However, what we witnessed took us by surprise."
The research team, led by Hugh Horgan, expressed to the media, "Studying this subglacial channel felt like unlocking a hidden world within our grasp.
